Weekend DIYs to Elevate Your Sofa Corner

Weekend DIYs to Elevate Your Sofa Corner

Let’s be honest—most of us have that one corner in the living room where the sofa sits, maybe with a side table and a cushion or two. It’s perfectly fine. But fine can get a little… stale. The good news? You don’t need a full makeover or a trip to an expensive decor store to freshen it up. Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of creativity, a free weekend, and a few clever DIYs to make your sofa corner feel brand new.

So if you’ve got a few hours to spare and a coffee in hand, here are some weekend-friendly DIY projects that can seriously level up your lounge vibes.

1. DIY Cushion Covers for a Quick Refresh

You’d be surprised how much new cushion covers can change the whole mood of your sofa corner. If you've got a sewing machine (or even just an iron and hemming tape), this one’s easy and budget-friendly.

One of our team members, Ella, made her own covers out of an old curtain set she wasn’t using anymore. She paired those with a couple of textured covers from leftover fabric samples and suddenly her plain grey couch looked like it belonged in a boutique hotel.

Stick to two or three complementary fabrics—think linen, velvet, or boucle—and mix up textures for a more styled look. You don’t have to go wild with patterns either; simple stripes or subtle prints add interest without overpowering the space.

2. Make a DIY Side Table or Crate Stand

Want a little spot for your coffee or phone? Build your own rustic side table using an old crate or a timber stump. A bit of sanding, a coat of stain or paint, and voilà—you’ve got a charming, functional piece that looks straight out of a design magazine.

One of our regular customers made a side table from stacked vintage books, topped it with a glass round from a second-hand shop, and now it’s the most complimented item in their living room.

You don’t need a workshop setup to do this. A basic toolkit, some elbow grease, and a splash of imagination will do the trick.

3. Add a Hanging Light or DIY Lamp

Nothing says cozy like good lighting. You can create your own pendant light using a simple hanging bulb kit and a DIY lampshade—think rattan, paper, or even an upcycled basket. For renters, battery-powered LED wall sconces are a great no-drill solution.

If you’re into crafting, try making a lamp base out of a ceramic vase or a concrete mold. Add a stylish shade, and you’ve got yourself a one-of-a-kind floor or table lamp that instantly elevates the whole corner.

We had a couple come into the showroom after making their own lamps with timber offcuts and linen shades. They showed us photos and honestly? They looked like they were straight off a Pinterest board.

4. Create a Wall Feature with Framed Fabric or DIY Art

Blank walls can suck the energy out of an otherwise cozy sofa nook. Instead of shopping for expensive artwork, try framing fabric swatches, wallpaper samples, or even your own abstract art (paint + canvas + your instincts = magic).

Another quick win? Hang a floating shelf and style it with little finds—candles, mini potted plants, small photo frames, or a quirky sculpture you love.

One weekend, we styled a corner in the showroom with a few $10 IKEA frames, some leftover upholstery fabric, and a couple of pressed leaves from someone’s backyard. It turned out better than half the store-bought art we’ve seen.

5. DIY Plant Stand or Hanging Planter

Bringing in greenery is a game changer. A leafy plant next to the sofa softens the look and brings life to the space—literally.

You can make your own plant stand with a few bits of wood or try a macramé hanging planter (yes, they’re back and surprisingly easy to make once you get the hang of it). Even repurposing an old stool or wire basket as a plant base can do wonders.

We styled a customer’s small corner using an old ladder as a vertical plant shelf, added fairy lights around it, and it became the most calming corner in their whole house.

6. Build a Sofa Tray for Armrest Convenience

Tired of reaching for the side table or accidentally kicking your coffee over? Try building a custom armrest tray. It’s just a few pieces of timber measured and joined to hug the sofa arm snugly. Finish it with wood oil or paint, and you’ve got a mini table for snacks, remotes, or that evening glass of wine.

If you're not into woodworking, you can cheat the look with bamboo placemats and hot glue for a foldable version that does the job.

We recently had a customer use theirs to prop up a mini succulent and a candle. Minimal effort, maximum style.

A Little DIY Goes a Long Way

You don’t need a design degree or a big budget to make your sofa corner feel special. It’s those small, personal touches—a new cover here, a lamp there, a plant that makes you smile—that turn your living room into a space that feels uniquely yours.

The best part? You can finish most of these projects in a single weekend. And by Sunday night, when you're curled up on your refreshed sofa with a cup of tea and a movie queued up, you’ll be surprised how much joy those little changes bring.

Because sometimes, the smallest projects make the biggest difference.
