Cleaning Products to Avoid for Lounge Fabrics

When it comes to keeping your lounge looking fresh, it’s tempting to grab whatever cleaning spray or solution is under the sink. But here’s the catch—not all cleaning products are safe for lounge fabrics. Some can actually cause more harm than good, leaving stains, discoloration, or even permanent damage. A lounge is an investment, so knowing what not to use is just as important as knowing the right way to clean it.

Harsh Bleach and Chlorine-Based Cleaners

Bleach might be a superhero in the laundry, but it’s a villain when it comes to your sofa. Chlorine-based products can strip colour, weaken fabric fibres, and leave behind uneven patches that never look the same again.

Think about it: that small stain you wanted to fix could turn into a glaring bleach mark in the middle of your cushion. Not worth it.

Ammonia and Strong Solvents

Ammonia-based products and heavy-duty solvents (like acetone or nail polish remover) might cut through grease, but they’re way too aggressive for most lounge fabrics. They can eat away at protective coatings, distort textures, and leave behind harsh chemical smells that linger for days.

Tip: If you’ve spilled something tricky like nail polish or ink, it’s safer to call a professional cleaner than risk damaging the upholstery yourself.

Furniture Polish and Wax Sprays

Furniture polish is great for wooden tables, not for your lounge. These sprays often leave a greasy residue that attracts dust and dirt, making your fabric look dull and grimy much faster. Over time, that buildup can be nearly impossible to remove.

Laundry Detergents and Dish Soaps

It sounds harmless—after all, they’re made for cleaning. But using concentrated laundry detergent or dish soap directly on lounge fabric can backfire. They often leave behind soapy residues that stiffen fabric, cause watermarks, or attract more dirt.

Real example: One of our customers once tried scrubbing out a juice stain with dishwashing liquid. The stain came out… but a large, stiff patch was left behind. In the end, they needed a professional upholstery clean anyway.

Multi-Purpose Household Cleaners

Those “one bottle cleans it all” sprays are handy in the kitchen, but lounges need a gentler touch. Many contain a mix of chemicals that are simply too strong for delicate fabrics. They can fade colours or leave behind sticky surfaces that never feel quite right.

What to Use Instead

So, if these products are off the table, what should you use? The safest bet is always products specifically designed for upholstery. Fabric-safe cleaners, mild upholstery shampoos, or even simple warm water with a small amount of gentle soap (tested on a hidden area first) usually do the trick. And for bigger spills or stubborn stains, professional upholstery cleaning is often the most cost-effective solution in the long run.

Protecting Your Investment

Your lounge isn’t just a piece of furniture—it’s where you relax, entertain, and spend time with family. Avoiding the wrong cleaning products means your fabric stays soft, vibrant, and welcoming for years to come. Treat it kindly, and it will return the favour every time you sink into it after a long day.
